In 2019, several media published a curious piece of news. The Sephora brand had implemented a powerful tool in its physical shops that allowed customers to decide whether they wanted advice on their purchase or not.
The strategy consisted of offering small coloured baskets, where customers could add their purchases. What was the peculiarity? These baskets, in two different colours, red or black, carried an implicit message. If customers held a red basket while shopping, they were asking for advice from the staff, whereas if the basket they held was black, customers wanted freedom and space to shop on their own.
The well-known cosmetics brand wanted to focus its attention on the will of its customers, thus giving them the power of decision, in order to improve the user experience by tailoring it to each case. Every consumer approaches shopping in a different way. Some want to be attended to in order to better understand the product and be advised by a professional, while others prefer to shop without social interactions, being able to compare products with each other and deciding for themselves what they take home.
How many times have you been offered products when you very first enter in a shop? The staff, always attentive and with the idea of selling, offer products for everything you need and even manage to generate new needs. How many times have you left the shop with products that you did not need before entering and that were not even on your mind or shopping list?
This strategy can ‘overstimulate’ customers and in some cases can be counterproductive, as they can become more confused or even overwhelmed and leave without the purchase.
Giving the freedom of choice to each consumer and thus favouring their shopping experience leads to better results and earlier brand positioning. Therefore, this initiative allows the customer to always make his or her own choice.
